The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, demanding immediate action on unresolved issues affecting public universities. The announcement was made by ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, during a press conference at the University of Abuja.
Osodeke expressed disappointment over the government’s lack of progress in addressing critical challenges, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, the reinstatement of governing councils in universities, and adequate funding for higher education. He stated that if these demands are not met within two weeks, the union may resort to industrial action that could disrupt academic activities nationwide.
The ultimatum comes as ASUU reflects on the deteriorating conditions faced by academics, with many reporting increased stress and financial hardship. The last major strike by ASUU lasted from February to October 2022, leaving many students without access to education for months.
Osodeke warned that failure to act could lead to another prolonged strike, urging citizens to hold the government accountable for any resulting crisis in the education sector. The union’s leadership plans to reconvene after the two-week period to assess the situation and determine their next steps.
