Fuel prices in Akwa Ibom have skyrocketed to ₦2,500 per liter following a shutdown of fuel stations in solidarity with the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN). This drastic increase comes after the Joint Task Force seized trucks belonging to NUPENG, prompting marketers to halt operations.
Prior to the shutdown, petrol was available at around ₦1,400 per liter, but the ongoing strike has led to panic buying and further price hikes. Governor Umo Eno has warned marketers against selling fuel above approved prices, emphasizing that the state government will take action against such practices. The situation has caused a ripple effect, raising transport fares and food prices across the state.
