In a dramatic turn of events early Friday morning, Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara intervened to foil an alleged attempt by the Nigerian Police to seize control of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) headquarters. This incident comes just days before the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.
Reports indicate that around 1 AM, a group of police officers, allegedly led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), attempted to breach the RSIEC’s strong room where sensitive electoral materials were stored. Their goal appeared to be the unauthorized removal of these materials ahead of the crucial elections.
The situation escalated when security personnel at the RSIEC noticed the suspicious activities and promptly alerted key officials within the commission and relevant government authorities. Governor Fubara was quickly informed, prompting him to take immediate action.
Leading a delegation that included top government officials, lawmakers from both the National Assembly and Rivers State House of Assembly, and other political stakeholders, Governor Fubara arrived at the RSIEC facility to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Thanks to Governor Fubara’s timely intervention, the alleged police takeover was thwarted, and the sensitive electoral materials remained secure. This decisive action has been hailed as crucial to maintaining a fair and transparent election process in Rivers State.
As local government elections approach, all eyes will be on how these developments impact voter confidence and the overall electoral landscape in Nigeria. Governor Fubara’s swift response underscores his commitment to upholding democratic principles in the state.
