NLC Akwa Ibom Chapter Calls For Service Withdrawal

NLC

In a pressing response to the recent directive from the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) for members to withdraw services in Akwa Ibom State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Akwa Ibom Chapter held an emergency session to address the potential fallout of this decision. Effective September 24, 2024, the withdrawal of services threatens to exacerbate the already dire economic situation for workers and citizens alike.

The NLC’s State Administrative Council (SAC) is urging Governor Umo Eno to take immediate action by setting up an investigative team to address the claims that led to the service withdrawal, particularly concerning the confiscation of petrol-loaded trucks. They expressed concern over the short notice given to citizens and workers, emphasizing that such abrupt changes could lead to significant hardship.

In a strong call to action, the NLC demanded the establishment of a Petroleum Monitoring Taskforce, as previously promised by the governor, to prevent future crises. They also directed all workers to withdraw their services and remain at home starting midnight on September 25 until a resolution is reached.

The NLC’s statement reflects deep concern for the welfare of workers, urging all parties involved to seek an amicable solution rather than allowing Akwa Ibom to become a battleground for disputes. As tensions rise, it remains to be seen how the government will respond and whether a resolution can be achieved before further disruption occurs in the state.

This unfolding situation highlights the urgent need for dialogue and effective governance in addressing fuel distribution issues and protecting the livelihoods of citizens in Akwa Ibom. Stay tuned for updates as this critical story develops!
